Final Report - HYICE (Optimisation of hydrogen powered internal combustion engines)

Abstract

This is the final report of the 'Optimization of the Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine' (HYICE) project, which aimed to optimise a concept for an internal combustion engine (ICE) which has the potential to outdo both gasoline and Diesel engines with respect to efficiency and power density. For this purpose the two most promising principles of mixture formation, Direct Injection (DI) and Cryogenic Port Injection (CPI), have been studied.

The report begins with an overview of the main concepts and background of the project, concerning engine technologies and accompanying computer simulation software needs. It later explains the motivation and objectives in respect with engine efficiency, fuel operation and market penetration potential and then goes into more detail about the experiments conducted, the innovations tested and the results obtained. Finally, there is an assessment of the project's results and the potential impacts in the industry.
