Project ID: 517704
Funded under: FP6-INCO

Abstract

This is the final report for the HAMMAN project which received funding under the European Commission's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). Its main aim was to develop strategies and scenarios for the safeguard, revitalisation and adaptive re-use of historic Islamic public baths or hammams as important social spaces and facilities within the contemporary and future conditions of Mediterranean Islamic cities.

The report covers the execution of the project, namely in the introductory part the objectives of the project are stated, as well as scenarios for the adaptive re-use of the hammarn as a public service centre for Mediterranean cities. Then the report states the need for a renovation that includes traditions and authenticity, as well as modernity. It goes on with stating some historical background about hammam, scenario making, the present and future values of hammam and some future ideas. It also covers certain case studies, as well as several other issues. The report ends with future ideas for the hamman and some conclusion notes.
