Final Report - CARDIOGENICS (Identification of genetic roots of coronary artery disease by combining stepwise genome wide association studies with genomic investigation …)

Project ID: 37593
Funded under: FP6-LIFESCIHEALTH

Abstract

This is the final report of CARDIOGENICS, a project funded under the European Commission's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) within the thematic priority 'Life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health'. CARDIOGENICS project aimed at discovering genetic variations leading to Coronary artery disease (CAD) and Myocardial infarction (MI), thereby uncovering the underlying disease mechanisms and helping develop new treatments.

The report covers the execution of the project, from general objectives, identification of major problems, work performed, results and the impact of the results. CARDIOGENICS exploited the major advances in genomics to identify risk genes for CAD / MI. The investigators had established large collections of affected individuals with an exceptionally strong genetic signal and subjected these to high-density genome-wide association analyses in order, ultimately, to determine the physiological roles of genes and proteins implicated in CAD / MI genetics and thus lead to the identification of novel drugable targets.
