Periodic Report - SYSINBIO (Systems biology as a driver for industrial biotechnology)

This is the second periodic report for the SYSINBIO project which received funding under the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). A key part of SYSINBIO was to coordinate activities on developing new and better mathematical models of metabolism that can be used for metabolic engineering. Activities on both stoichiometric models and kinetic models have been coordinated. The use of stoichiometric models has been further advanced and we have defined methods that allows for rapid setting up this kind of models. For this purpose methods and standards were formulated that should allow for faster development of this kind of models, and developed a database of existing models that can be used as scaffolds for building new models was developed. Furthermore, in the field of kinetic models a detailed review of the state-of-the art on the use of these models was performed, and based on this, recommendations were drafted, in particular for use in focused industrial metabolic engineering projects.
