Periodic Report 2 - BRIDGE (Sustainable urban planning decision support accounting for urban metabolism)

Project ID: 211345
Funded under: FP6-IST, FP7-ENVIRONMENT

Abstract

This is the periodic summary report for the BRIDGE project which received funding under the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). BRIDGE is a joint effort of 14 organisations from 11 European Union countries and aims to illustrate the advantages of considering environmental issues in urban planning. It did not perform a complete life-cycle analysis or whole system urban metabolism, rather it focused on specific metabolism components (energy, water, carbon, pollutants). The project integrated the development of numerical tools and methodologies for the analysis of fluxes between a city and its environment with its validation and application in terms of future development alternatives, based on environmental and socio-economic indicators for baseline and extreme situations.

A decision support system combining biophysical observations with socio-economic issues was developed to allow end users to evaluate several urban planning alternatives based on their initial identification of planning objectives. In this way, sustainable planning strategies can be analysed based on quantitative assessments of energy, water, carbon and pollutants fluxes.
