Final Report - DIRECTSPARE (Strengthening the industries' competitive position by the development of a logistical and technological system for spare parts that is based on on-demand production)

Project ID: 213424
Funded under: FP7-NMP

Abstract

This is the final executive summary report for the DIRECTSPARE project which received funding under the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Its main aim was to develop a technological and logistical system that is a fundamental and economically sustainable solution for spare parts by using on-demand production. By following the DIRECTSPARE business model manufacturers should rapidly produce only those spare parts that are required, at a location close to the equipment that needs to be repaired.

Computer-aided engineering techniques were used to predict the performance of products, such as finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics. Both metal and polymer materials were subject to development. Three-dimensional printing, selective laser melting and sintering were employed and the project results were used for selective metal laser melting in order to make the materials fully Rapid manufacturing (RM) compatible.
