FIVE YEAR ASSESSMENT REPORT RELATED TO THE SPECIFIC PROGRAMME: ENERGY, ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, 1995-1999

Funded under: FP5-EESD

Abstract

The Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development Programme is important for Europes ability to satisfy future energy demands and to protect the natural environment and its resources.

Since the Fifth Framework Programme the Non-Nuclear Energy and the Environment Programmes have been combined in one thematic programme: Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development.

At the policy level, a degree of interdependency between these programmes is evident, particularly in view of the Kyoto agreement on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Clean, reliable and affordable energy is a condition for a sustainable development of the European economy. The results of the Non-Nuclear Energy Programme must therefore find their way to the environmental and other policies developed by the Commission. Similarly, the results of the Environment and Sustainable Development Programme must be reflected in the policies on energy, transport, industry, and any other aspect of human activity.
