FIVE YEAR ASSESSMENT REPORT RELATED TO THE SPECIFIC PROGRAMME: COMPETITIVE AND SUSTAINABLE GROWTH, 1995-1999

Funded under: FP5-GROWTH

Abstract

Science and technology have enormous potential for the creation of wealth for the European Community and its Member States, for contributions to the general wellbeing of EU citizens and improvement of the Quality of Life of people worldwide, and for the implementation of European policies.

The European Union must ensure that it is in a position to harness and exploit its scientific and technological bases - both academic and industrial - to attain a competitive global position. A key to successful exploitation is to ensure that there is continuity between those generating new concepts and information and those in a position to use it for the creation of new products and processes. The challenge facing the EU also includes the solution of environmental problems to allow a sustainable development for the future European society.
