Final Report - REMEDIE (Regenerative medicine in Europe: emerging needs and challenges in a global context)

Project ID: 217180
Funded under: FP7-SSH

Abstract

This is the final report for the REMEDIE project which received funding under the European Commission (EC)'s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). REMEDIE thoroughly examined the development of Regenerative medicine (RM) field, defined as the application of novel biomaterials specifically cells (including stem cells), genes (via gene therapy) and biodegradable scaffolding materials, to achieve a regenerative effect. The economic (innovation-related), political (especially governance related) and the bioethical (including its legal aspects) aspects were explored to compare Europe with other parts of the globe.

The report discusses the major scientific and regulatory hurdles ahead as clinical trials increase. It also identifies some key differences in the political cultures shaping the field as one move, from the United States, Europe to China. Findings in relation to key ethical and legal issues (which overlap) are summarised. The report concludes with a range of detailed policy recommendations relating to the governance, enabling and strengthening of the field and its regulatory, corporate and clinical promise.

The report is accompanied by a separate series of detailed annexes relating to the discrete results of the substantive seven work packages.
