Final Report - IRENE (In silico Rational Engineering of Novel Enzymes)

This is the final report for the IRENE project which received funding under the European Commission (EC)'s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). IRENE's main aim was to develop computational methods and strategies which were applied to rationally design and produce biocatalysts endowed with new promiscuous properties functional to industrial applications. The report includes an executive summary focusing on the project main aim and targets, as well as on the solutions it provided and its impact and goes on with a list of the partners involved. Furthermore, the report identifies the major bottlenecks for the replacement of conventional synthetic routes with biocatalysts in industry and the full exploitation of enzymes' catalytic potential and the way it approached the bottlenecks. An advanced platform of software and computational methods was produced which led to the drawing of general guidelines, which represent a state-of-the-art reference for effective in silico enzyme design and screening. The report covers the project results in further detail and closes with the results' potential impact.
