Periodic Report 1 - CFD-DEM (Numerical Simulation of Sediment Entrainment)

Abstract

This is the first periodic report of the CFD-DEM project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The project is investigating factors that influence the stability of the particles in sediment transport in river and coastal systems. These include drag and lift forces, degree of protrusion, blocking by particles upstream, and the effect of moving and stationary particles downstream. Current sediment transport models do not take account of the turbulent structure of the flow and the interactions between flow and sediment.

So far, results have been collected on sediment entrainment in a turbulent channel flow with different values of the Shields Function. Factors that influence the stability of the particles will be studied further, including a large eddy simulation. Successful results could make it possible to investigate the exact particle-movement mechanism by better understanding sediment dynamics.
