Final Report - 3D NANOCHEMISCOPE (Combined SIMS-SFM instrument for the 3-dimensional chemical analysis of nanostructures)

Abstract

This is the final report for the 3D NANOCHEMISCOPE project which received funding under the European Commission (EC)'s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The goal of the project was to develop a novel combination of a new time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometer (TOF-SIMS) with substantially optimised lateral resolution and improved sensitivity, combined with a new high-resolution ultra-high vacuum scanning force microscopy. The combination of the two techniques should provide for the first time previously unavailable, complementary information on nanoscale surface chemistry and surface morphology in one instrument.

After covering the project's main aim, the report explains how this combination would be achieved and then presents the technical details of the analysis tool developed by the consortium as well as the further activities undertaken. Finally, it covers an overview of the results' impact.
