Abstract

This is the final report for the NANOTEST project which received funding under the European Commission (EC)'s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). NANOTEST aimed to enhance understanding of mechanisms of interactions of nanoparticles (NPs) with cells, tissues and organs. This should benefit medical sciences and provide key knowledge for the safe use of medical NPs and should contribute to the formulation of guidelines and recommendations for future risk assessment of NPs used in clinical practice.

The report starts with an executive summary providing a general overview of the project and goes on further explaining its context, the main objectives as well as the specific objectives of each work package and the several tasks defined in each WP in order to fulfil these objectives. NANOTEST integrates the investigation of toxicological properties and effects of NPs in several target systems by developing a battery of in vitro assays using cell cultures derived from different biological systems; the experiments revealed that oxidative stress and cytotoxic effects induced by NPs depend on the NP properties, the test used and the cell type. The report summarises the aims, the outcomes and some concluding remarks for each work package and closes with an overview of the project impact.
