Final Report - SAFE@SEA (Protective clothing for improved safety and performance in the fisheries)

Project ID: 229334
Funded under: FP7-NMP

Abstract

This is the final report of the SAFE@SEA project which received funding under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) the objectives of which fell under the research theme nanosciences, nanotechnologies, materials and new production technologies. The main concept behind SAFE@SEA was to combine integration of ""state of art"" materials and ICT solutions with the development of new speciality and high-performance protective materials to realise a totally new protective clothing concept. The increased safety will be provided by improved solutions for buoyancy, thermal protection, tear and puncture resistance, head and hand protection, emergency warning and positioning systems. The advanced personal protective clothing system was to be designed to satisfy end-users requirements for multi-functionality, ergonomic design and comfort in order to ensure user acceptance.

The report covers the background to the project, namely the hazards faced in the fishing community, and then expands on the relevance of the project in attempting to reduce and minimize these risks. The report then breaks down the achievements made by the project according to each work package. The report concludes by highlighting the potential impact the project will make on the industry.
