Final Report - STAYCOOL (Lightweight, long endurance body cooling for fire fighters)

Project ID: 262673
Funded under: FP7-SME

Abstract

This is the final report of the STAYCOOL project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The project developed the STAYCOOL personal cooling system, a lightweight mobile active cooling device designed to prevent thermal stress on humans, maintain a constant heat-extraction temperature at a comfortable range, and avoid the effect of cool spots. The system regulates body temperature through a set of patches on a garment in contact with skin. These patches are attached to a secondary water-cooled heat exchanger which removes the heat extracted from the body by evaporation. The STAYCOOL system can significantly increase the time a firefighter can spend attending a fire, thereby reducing the time taken to extinguish it, damage to property and potential loss of life. Further product development could focus on applications requiring low-weight, mobile and smart thermal stress control.
