Final Report - SAFEMETAL (Increasing EU citizen Security by utilizing innovAtive intelligent signal processing systems For Euro-coin validation and metal quality testing)

Project ID: 262568
Funded under: FP7-SME

Abstract

This is the final report of the SAFEMETAL project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The euro is subject to increasing counterfeiting activities. Due to the large volume of coins produced by European mints, material for blank coins is sourced from different suppliers. Recent EU standards to increase security by reducing the spread of parameter values are creating major challenges for manufacturers. The project set out to develop advanced signal processing and data-fusion techniques able to distinguish between counterfeit and genuine coins, while also finding applications in the aerospace and nuclear industries. Among other objectives, techniques included: finding ways to measure electrical conductivity; developing mathematical models; detailed characterisation of electromagnetic properties; investigations into surface finishes; and the development and application of novel signal-processing and measuring sensors.
