Final Report - MONITORAIL (Long range inspection and condition monitoring of rails using guided waves)

Project ID: 262194
Funded under: FP7-SME

This is the final report of the MONITORAIL project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The project’s rail monitoring system aimed to detect small cracks in rails, particularly where they are difficult to detect by other means. The final
results demonstrated the system’s reliability for successful detection of such defects under simulated service conditions. The project data and analysis provided are available via a variety of communication media and could be used to improve rail track design by providing better understanding of the origins of defects and their propagation. Indirect savings will be also made regarding operational costs since accidents and incidents involving broken rails will be minimised. Forced closure of a line for unscheduled repair interventions, causing freight and passenger disruption, is another huge annual expenditure that will be minimised thanks to the new rail monitoring system.
