This is the periodic report of the ARTIVASC 3D project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). ARTIVASC 3D brings together 16 partners from backgrounds such as material development, process engineering, biology and medicine to develop a synthetic soft-tissue graft. Potential uses cover a vast array of clinical applications, including bioartificial vascularised skin in trauma treatment for efficient and scar-free wound healing, vessel replacement and potentially the development of complex synthetic biomedical scaffolds. The project is focusing on developing biocompatible materials and testing them for cytotoxicity and cell viability, morphology, proliferation, migration and differentiation. Implementation and development of single technologies and a suitable process chain are well under way and the design and construction of prototype machines for scaffold handling and assembly has begun.
