Final Report - SAFE CATHETER (Development of a cost-effective anti-bacterial device for the 37 million urethral catheters used in enlarged Europe)

Project ID: 222164
Funded under: FP7-SME

Abstract

The rise in the number of patients in hospitals treated for nosocomial infections is rising, particularly in patients associated with indwelling urinary catheters. Therefore, the SAFE CATHETER project, which was funded under the European Commission (EC)'s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), aimed to design and realise a cost-effective device able to create a barrier that would avoid migration of the bacteria intraluminally, preventing the utilised biofilm from reaching the bladder and causing infection.

This publishable summary firstly outlines the project background and then briefly refers to the scope of work of the consortium. It also lists the characteristics of the developed product and closes with a picture of the proposed design.
