Final Report - NANOFOODS (Development of foods containing nanoencapsulated ingredient)

This is the final report of the NANOFOODS project which was funded under the European Commission (EC)'s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The project adopted encapsulation technology to preserve food bioactive compounds during processing and storage, and to achieve their controlled release in the GI tract. Tailored nanocapsules, able to deliver omega-3 and silymarin complex into the lower gut, was designed and produced by an Israeli SMEs in collaboration with Technion.

The report notes that the efficacy of the food products was assessed by a human trial on patients affected by Intestinal Bowel Disease (WP6). Results of the studies gave the proof of the potential efficacy of encapsulated ingredients in the delivery of bioactive compounds, increasing bioavailability and showing their anti-inflammatory action on the serum cytokine pattern.
