Final Report - REFRESH (Green technology for fresh water sea-transportation based on a flexible containers system)

Project ID: 262494
Funded under: FP7-SME

Abstract

This is the final report of the REFRESH project which was funded under the European Commission (EC)'s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The aim of REFRESH project has been to develop a cost effective and energy-efficient solution for the sea transport of fresh water based on a modular system of interlinked flexible containers towed by a tugboat. REFRESH approach show lower environmental impact with respect to competing fresh water supply technologies such as desalinators, and has a clear cost-effective advantage with respect to alternative tanker ships. The report notes that the breakthrough offered by REFRESH system relies on the fact that each single module is kept sufficiently small to be easily managed, but the entire system is large enough to be cost-effective as allows a flexible service adjusting the total payload to the actual needs of the receiver. As a main outcome of REFRESH project, a medium-size prototype was manufactured with the aim of assessing the feasibility of the proposed design and the performance of the selected materials to withstand the requirements foreseen.
