Abstract

This is the final report of the RAD UNITS project funded under the European Commission (EC)'s Sixth Framework Programme (FP6). The aim of the project was to produce a report on absorbed dose determination and quantitative evaluation of image quality in computed tomography (CT). For patient dosimetry in CT, the report committee defines reference conditions to determine the CT radiation output and from there recommends methods to derive the absorbed dose to the different organs at risk using appropriate Monte Carlo programmes. The report contains a rather complete and detailed set of dosimetric information that has been collected and analysed. As far as image quality is concerned, it is current practice in radiology to report image quality based on subjective evaluation. The report committee discussed several approaches concerning spatial and contrast resolution. MTF (modulation transfer function) and NPS (noise power spectrum) analyses are applied to the CT conditions. The present report is based on a series of international publications on the topic. A large proportion of these publications were written by the members of the report committee.
