Final Report - FLADAR (Flood zoning in Southeast Attica using gauge calibrated radar rainfall and advanced modeling techniques)

Project ID: 211108
Funded under: FP7-PEOPLE

This is the final report of the FLADAR project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The project set out to conduct a preliminary flood-risk assessment in East Attiki (130km2) then draw up flood-hazard zones for a partially developed watershed there. Following unorganised urban expansion, there were concerns about several new flood-prone locations as no flood-hazard maps existed. Rain-gauge-calibrated radar rainfall, distributed hydrologic modelling, advanced integrated modelling at a river-basin scale and GIS analysis support FLADAR’s assessment and results.
%A preliminary study analysis pinpointed vulnerable areas in the watershed on which urban planners and engineers should focus. This result could benefit many communities since it shows that in ungauged watersheds or sub-basins, where measured values are almost non-existent, there are simple but reliable ways to identify areas susceptible to flood hazard and protect them to minimise losses from flood events.
