Periodic Report - NERVEREGENERATION (Nerve guidance channels based on synthetic polymer – polysaccharide biomaterials)

Project ID: 206269
Funded under: FP7-PEOPLE

Abstract

This is the periodic report of the NERVEREGENERATION project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The research is focused on the development and evaluation of a series of novel guide channels based on biocompatible and biodegradable polymers for peripheral nervous system (PNS) regeneration. The goal is to develop novel polymeric materials of natural and synthetic origin to be constituents of nerve guidance channels, and analyse those biomaterials and the manufactured tubes via physical-chemical evaluation and in vitro biocompatibility. The influence of irradiation on the biomaterials is a further main aim as radiation is used as a fabrication technology and for sterilisation. The last main goal is to develop a method for manufacturing guidance channels with improved biocompatibility and optimal biodegradability for efficient peripheral reconstruction.
