Periodic Report - SIRT1 AND DIABETES (Identification of the genes regulated by the SIRT1 histone deacetylase and their contribution in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and obesity)

Project ID: 207745
Funded under: FP7-PEOPLE

Abstract

This is the periodic report of the SIRTI AND DIABETES project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Obesity is a major risk factor for chronic diseases such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. In an effort to increase knowledge of these diseases and develop more therapeutic approaches, the new genes involved in the pathogenesis of obesity must be identified and a better knowledge of the molecular regulation of obesogenic genes acquired. Understanding the mechanisms regulated buy SIRT1 (a histone deacetylase class III) is crucial, so the project performed genome-wide binding of SIRT1 and several histone modifications.

The results of the study may contribute to a better understanding of SIRT1 regulation at both transcriptional and epigenetic level which could lead to new therapies for obesity-related diseases.
