Periodic Report - NANOTRANSDUCER (Modeling and Design of Thin Film Waveguides Terminated with Nano-optical Transducers)

This is the periodic report of the NANOTRANSDUCER project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). There is increasing interest in intense optical spots smaller than the diffraction limit for use in emerging nanotechnology applications. To address practical problems for use in technological applications such as high-density data storage, it is necessary to analyse and design systems that address large body mass, high cost, and manufacturing difficulties. In this project, thin-film structures that offer advantages for overcoming these problems are being analysed and designed. Initially, the project developed the modelling and design of thin-film waveguide light-focusing devices. It has also designed, among other transducers, a novel nanotransducer which is a potential candidate for emerging technology for consumer products, such as heat-system magnetic recording. Overall, the results are very encouraging, especially as regards data-storage systems.
