This is the final report of the LOMAIVITICINS project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). This project entailed the development of a methodology for the synthesis of the potent anti-tumour antibiotics Lomaiviticins A, B and Kinamycin C. Lomaiviticins are highly active DNA cleaving agents that exhibit potent activity against a broad spectrum of cancer cell lines. Although isolated in the 1970s, the potential of kinamycins as novel anti-cancer agents was discovered only recently with the isolation of lomaiviticins in 2001. As initial model studies on lomaiviticins did not come to fruition, project goals and priorities were re-evaluated.

In Period 2, the project focused on the synthesis of the structurally related kinamycins. The researchers expect further research on the design and synthesis of new analogues based on kinamycins and lomaiviticins to ultimately lead to the development of novel cancer therapeutics that may improve the health of EU citizens.
