Abstract

This is the final report of the LEAF TOMOGRAPHY project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). This project focused on increasing the thermodynamic efficiency of turbine engines by eliminating the formation of chains of misoriented grains, known as 'freckles'. It aimed to eliminate freckles by completely characterising the alloy's crystallography, morphology, and composition at micrometre to nanometre length scales. Researchers used an innovative and novel approach combining highly sophisticated techniques to quantify elemental concentrations in freckles and their immediate vicinity. Computational thermodynamic simulations were performed in four regions of interest using Thermo-Calc. The densities calculated in these areas are the driving force for freckle formation.

Project results will develop knowledge of how to predict and control the formation of freckles in nickel-based superalloys. This will help the aeronautical industry to increase turbine engine efficiency and save energy.
