Final Report - GENOESYMBPESTINSECTS (Genomics and metagenomics of bacterial endosymbionts of pest insect)

This is the final report of the GENOESYMBPESTINSECTS project, which is funded under the European Commission (EC) Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). The research covered the genomic analysis of bacterial endosymbionts of undesired or agricultural pest insects such as cockroaches, white flies, and the olive fly. All these insect groups harbour symbiotic bacteria as obligate or facultative partners that play important functional roles for the host, e.g. by providing essential amino acids or involvement in nitrogen recycling.

During the first half of the project, work was relatively equally distributed across the three parts. However, for reasons explained in the mid-term project report, the work then concentrated entirely on Blattabacterium-cockroach symbiosis to accomplish the genome analysis of the bacterial symbiont of Cryptocercus punctulatus. The main impact of the project results is a better understanding of the biology of insect endosymbionts, especially that of cockroaches.
