Final Report - NEOTETHYS (The Late Eocene climatic transition from greenhouse to icehouse conditions in the Neo-Tethys)

Project ID: 236311
Funded under: FP7-PEOPLE

This is the final report of the NEOTETHYS project which is funded under the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). It investigated the hypothesis that the climate step between early Eocene and the early Oligocene era was partly triggered by closure of the Arabian-Asian gateway in a progression of step-wise variations in sea level and ocean circulation. High-resolution integrated magnetostratigraphic and paleoenvironmental analysis, including biostratigraphy, environmental magnetism and stable isotope records, were recorded in areas in the Indian Ocean, Italy and Turkey.

The results provide a continuous paleoceanographic history for the early Eocene to early Oligocene period. They have a wide impact since new and important details have been discovered on the paleoclimatic events before and during the Eocene to Oligocene (E-O) transition. Development of these records on climate and environmental change from the Eocene to the E-O transition interval contribute important new data for a crucial period in the Earth's history.
