Final Report - ANALOGIES - KAPON (Analogical Reasoning and Conceptual Change in Physics Education)

Project ID: 236215
Funded under: FP7-PEOPLE

Abstract

This is the final report for the ANALOGIES-KAPON project, funded by the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). This project developed a theory that explains how and to what extent instructional analogies affect conceptual change during the acquisition of new knowledge in physics. It derived practical recommendations from this theory regarding the use of analogical reasoning when teaching science. Clinical interviews were conducted and a results model was created for analysis.

The project found that the activation of prior knowledge in the form of simple schemes strongly affects a learner's acceptance or rejection of an analogical inference. The findings have also highlighted the advantages of knowledge analysis as a research method in educational research, thus enhancing our understanding of the nature of effective instruction.
