Final Report - BALTIC SEALS HISTORY (Tracking the impact of Holocene environmental change on the population genetics and demographics of four Baltic seal species)

Project ID: 235978
Funded under: FP7-PEOPLE

Abstract

This is the final report of the BALTIC SEALS HISTORY project, funded by the European Commission's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). This project aimed to understand the long-term dynamics of genetic and demographic changes in closely related species of seals - ringed seal, grey seal, harbour seal, extinct harp seal - inhabiting the Baltic Sea.

The genetic variability of the seals was compared, enabling an analysis of the seal populations over time. A reconstruction of the demographic changes in the Baltic harp seal population suggests that it had a high population throughout most of its history, and then declined abruptly towards extinction. Effects of climatic fluctuations on population dynamics of other seal species were not clearly found. The results of this project have contributed to a better understanding of the processes underlying population extinction or survival.
