  • EU water initiative: Water for life. Health, livelihoods, economic development, peace and security. Implementing the programme of action of the WSSD. Working document

Abstract

Over 1 billion people worldwide lack access to safe water supply and almost 2.5 billion people lack adequate sanitation. More than 5 million people die each year from water-related diseases that are mostly preventable. The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) provides an impetus and political support for solving the water crisis. The EU has established a water initiative as a key contribution to the implementation of the WSSD programme of action and to help achieve water-related Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The initiative involves new strategic partnerships of the European Union with Africa and 12 countries from Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and central Asia to contribute to:
- halve the number of people with no access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation by 2015;
- develop integrated water resources management and efficiency plans by 2005.
