This report contains contributions on radiation damage to DNA; transition metal complexes as sensitizers or protectors against oxygen free radical toxicity; oxygen enhancement of free radical damage to DNA; free radicals formed by electron gain in oligomers of DNA; theoretical studies of molecular mechanisms of DNA damage induced by hydroxyl radicals; and oxidative DNA sugar damage by targeted antibiotic free radicals. Other subjects discussed at the symposium are the competition between oxidants (radio sensitizers) and reductants (radio protectors) in modifying free radical damage to DNA; DNA damage in frozen aqueous solution; and free radical formation in single crystals of 2- deoxyguanosine 5- monophosphate and guanine hydrobromide monohydrate after X-irradiation at 10 and 65 K; an ESR, ENDOR and FSE study.
