Effect of power reflection on the operation of a low Q, 8GHz gyrotron
High power microwave sources used for heating and current drive of fusion plasmas could be subject to high reflections from the load. The effect would be to restrict their domain of operation. The report investigates the influence of strong reflections on the characteristics of a gyrotron with low Q cavity. The Rieke diagrams (i.e. contours of constant power and frequency in the complex plane of reflection ) are obtained numerically using TWA, a fully relativistic self-consistent gyrotron code. An experiment has been performed to determine the characteristics of an 8GHz, high power (300 kw), low Q (Q-225) gyrotron under high complex reflection coefficients. Comparison between the numerical predictions and the experimental data is presented.
