A study was conducted to evaluate the trophic potential of the effluents of the wastewater treatment plant on River Bardello (Lake Varese). From May 1987 to May 1988 algal assays were performed with river waters and sewage effluents using the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum as test organism. Average annual values of AGP for river waters of 20 mg/l and sewage effluents of 24 mg/l respectively, were calculated. These values can be considered typical of eutrophic environments. The algal assay AGP indicated that iron was generally the main growth-limiting factor, with N and P as secondary limiting nutrients. A 6-band classification of water qualities, based on algal growth potential and maximum growth rate, was proposed.
