Enquiry into the role of steel structures in fires in industrial buildings
The various fire safety measures may have an important bearing on the building and exploitation costs. This especially holds if substantial requirements are set to the fire resistance of steel buildings, since such requirements normally will call for expensive fire protection on the steel structure. With respect to the ability of the various fire safety measures to reduce the loss due to fire, no systematic information is available. Nevertheless, in circles of fire insurance, a trend becomes manifest to emphasize the significance of the fire resistance of the load bearing structure in the premium rate system. Especially for low rise industrial steel buildings, which at present are often realized in unprotected steel, this will have serious financial consequences. Therefore, it has been decided - both in France and The Netherlands - to carry out a field survey on the role of steel structures in fires in low rise industrial buildings. Although the two surveys have the same scope, they are not identical. This paper describes the main results of both studies.
