The accuracy of sampling product streams
The parameters that affect the accuracy of sampling equipment are investigated in the light of measured tonnage flow rates of product streams and more stringent product quality requirements. The aim is to produce a system capable of sampling a 1000tph product stream to provide a small bottle sample ready for analysis. To enable sampling equipment to be tested under a variety of test conditions and to have total control, a purpose-designed Sampling Test Rig has been constructed. A chain bucket primary sampler was installed on the rig. This sampler can be fitted with any of three different cutter apertures. The speed of the sampler cutter is variable. Provided the sampler installation is free from bias, it is found that with a cutter aperture of 2.5 times the nominal upper size of the material being sampled, a sampler cutter speed of 2.0 m/s will give accurate samples. Lower speeds do not give an increase in accuracy. The design of the sampler installation has a marked effect on the accuracy of samples taken.
