Abstract

The FTU vacuum vessel has been designed to withstand high electromagnetic and thermal loads and to reach ultra high vacuum conditions which are essential to obtain clean, impurity free plasma. After a survey of the vacuum chamber requirements and of the design development, the paper reports the main manufacturing processes;- welding, stress relieving, machining, nondestructive testing, outgassing and preassembly.
