European Institute for Transuranium Elements Expertise and programmesFunded under: JRC-NUCFUEL 5C
This report gives an overview of programmes and prospects of the European Institute for Transuranium Elements (Karlsruhe Establishment). It describes the expertise and equipment of its various scientific-technical units and summarises some of their recent achievements. The main part of the work concerns specific research programmes on nuclear fuels and fundamental studies on actinides. Other activities deal with problems of reactor safety, fissile materials control and the management of radioactive waste. Relations exist with programmes on Environmental Research and on Materials Research. The high-flux reactor at Petten offers means for testing and experiment. On behalf of EURATOM, the Institute analyses samples from European nuclear plants, mostly in a computer-controlled automatic laboratory. Contract work is performed in the field of nuclear fuels and the preparation and characterization of alloys containing 'Minor Actinides'. Research into the acceleration of aerosol scavenging in an acoustic field is also current.
