Abstract

In the management and regulation of industrial risks, decision makers must consider technological, economic, environmental and sociopolitical factors simultaneously. A computer based, integrated system called IRIMS has been developed to support risk management activities, with special emphasis on hazardous chemicals. It includes multi-attribute based decision aids. The IRIMS system integrates databases containing the relevant information with simulation models, which address the problems of environmental assessment, risk analysis and system optimisation. Simulations can rapidly be set up and run by non-specialist users. Graphical displays concentrate the user`s attention on the most significant aspects of the results. The present version is a demonstration prototype. New modules can be added as necessary and can, in principle, be interconnected with existing ones.
