Determination of the thickness of the amorphous carbon coatings on the inner wall of TEXTOR by optical interference colours
The thickness of a-C:H layers deposited on the inner wall of the tokamak TEXTOR has been determined from the interference colours. The colour-thickness relation is established by calculations taking into account the optical constants and by direct measurements of the thickness from coated samples. Agreement is found for a-C:H on stainless steel and on Si if n = 2.4 is assumed. An extrapolation for Mo and W substrates is made. In TEXTOR, 55 nm as average thickness of the a-C;H layer is found with a toroidal variation of 50% after a typical carbonisation of the walls.
