Abstract

Very intense X-ray emission has been observed from the ablation region of solid D(2) pellets injected into JET for refuelling studies. The characteristics of the emission in the region of the pellet have been measured and the evidence for the formation of a plasma hose is discussed. The observations are compared with a neutral shielding ablation model and reasonable agreement is found.
