Under certain operational conditions LWR fuel rods may be axially loaded in addition to the thermal load. For study of the effect of axial loading on the fuel rod behaviour, an appropriate irradiation device (irradiation capsule) has been designed. As with most of the HFR irradiation devices for LWR fuel rod testing, this device is also designed for testing of pre-irradiated fuel rod segments (rodlets) originating from power reactors. The irradiation device is therefore reloadable whilst immersed in the reactor pool. The axial loading is performed by a bellows system which is remotely controlled by a programmable logical controller system. Time dependent loading scenaria between zero and approximately 1500 N can be applied.
