Abstract

This report presents preliminary research into the problem of accidents during the transport by sea of radioactive material, following the accident at Mont-Louis involving cylinders of uranium hexafluoride. The principal information gathered during this study is: - facts relating to the number of boats lost or seriously damaged in the areas mentioned - the main causes of these accidents - the probability of serious accidents or collisions, according to the minimum separation, for boats navigating the Channel - the choice of eight reference scenarios related to shipping accidents preparatory to a future study. These scenarios represent the worst possible cases for accidents to different types of ship which could lead to damage to containers of radioactive material.
