This report summarizes the findings of the external panel of experts set up to evaluate the R&D programme COST 90, COST 91, COST 90 bis, COST 91 bis in the field of "Food Technology" (1978-1987). The evaluation covers the scientific and technological achievements of the programmes (quality and practical relevance of the results) and the contribution of the programmes to Community objectives. The evaluation focusses also on the "added value" for the Community Member States and for the other European participating states as a result of the coordination in the COST framework. The effectiveness of the management and coordination of the programmes including the operational structure and the choice of areas are also assessed. A number of recommendations are finally given for the orientation and structure of future programmes in the field of food technology.
