The proposed work lies within the framework of the integration of a cold-rolling mill and a continuous-annealing installation. In order to reduce the high costs of pickling hot-rolled strip prior to cold-rolling, it is proposed to cold-roll strip emanating from the hot mill, without pickling. In a feasibility study, cold-rolling was carried out in classical fashion, without special precautions. The oxide released during rolling fouled the rolls and accelerated wear. This led to the selection of a solid lubricant - powdered zinc stearate. The complete production cycle was then put into operation including the following:- 1) rolling of unpickled hot band, using zinc stearate as a roll lubricant 2) electrolytic degreasing of the strip 3) continuous-annealing, followed by pickling with formic acid 4) a skin pass. The surface obtained at the end of treatment was evaluated in terms of cleanliness, surface appearance and extent of corrosion.
