Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The present paper illustrates the ECSC research carried out by several Laboratories and Institutes in the European Community, in the field of welding and weldability, during 1976-1986. The industrial impact of the research is discussed, with reference to the potential exploitation of the characteristics of modern steels, to obtain better quality, productivity and economy in welded structures. It stresses the importance of research into heat-affected or fused zone behaviour in welded joints and refers to current work. It is suggested that the potential of modern steel should be promoted by developing the appropriate European Standards and Regulations and by providing suitable guidelines for designers, users and manufacturers, with the aim of achieving improved development and competitivity in welded steel structures.
