Abstract

In the manufacture of flat stainless steel products, the pickling stages of hot and cold rolled strips are costly and careful operations which affect both the product quality and the environment, owing to the use of highly corrosive acid solutions which cause considerable pollution. It has been deemed advisable to make a careful review of operating practices in use on production lines in order to optimise consumption of chemicals and ensure high product quality from the point of view of pickling operation effects. This has also necessitated the development and application of chemical and electrochemical methodologies capable of furnishing plant operation and quality control management with the criteria that will guarantee proper performance of the pickling process to suit the different types of stainless steel treated.
