Despite intensive herbicide usage, many problems with weeds remain to be solved, other than toxico-ecological aspects (very serious water and soil pollution). A high number of new weed species have prevailed. The development of alternative safety methods and a means for weed control is urgent. It is suggested closer attention be paid to herbicide-resistant weeds in comparison with new selective products and new growth-regulating chemicals. The reaction of weeds and crops to the herbicides, as well as alternative strategies of intervention such as cultural, mechanical, physical and biological methods will be examined.
